Coquitlam residents, students and organizations have until May 1 to submit nominations for the City’s 2020 Environmental Achievement Awards.
COQUITLAM, BC, April 20, 2020 – Coquitlam residents, students and organizations have until May 1 to submit nominations for the City’s 2020 Environmental Achievement Awards.
The City has already received more than a dozen nominations for this year’s awards. As we kick off National Volunteer Week, and with so many doing great things to keep our community safe, the City is encouraging the community to take this opportunity to nominate a Coquitlam environmental champion.
New this year is the Green Sprout category for children ages three – 12. We recognize there are many younger people getting involved in their neighbourhoods making a different in our community.
Nominees do not need to be residents of Coquitlam, but their activities or projects should occur in Coquitlam or directly benefit our community. Nominations can be submitted online at www.coquitlam.ca/enviroawards.
About the Awards
Coquitlam’s Environmental Achievement Awards recognize community volunteers and environmental stewards who work to promote, preserve and enhance Coquitlam’s natural environment.
Nominees can be teachers and educators, schools, organizations and service clubs, as well as individual adults, youth and children.
- Individual (Green Sprout) – ages 3-12
- Individual – ages 13-18
- Individual – 19 and over
- Teacher or Educator
- Group – School or Youth Club
- Group – Organization, Service Club, etc.
- Lifetime Achievement – 20 years or more of volunteer experience
Awards Recognize a Wide Range of Contributions
Coquitlam has more than 2,200 acres of parks and natural spaces, including many kilometres of creeks, streams and rivers that stretch across the community.
Nominations can be made in the areas of:
- environmental conservation/protection;
- environmental education/public awareness;
- sustainable living; and
- habitat enhancement/rehabilitation.
More than 20 local groups and hundreds of volunteers take on projects year-round that support the environment in many ways. A sample of volunteer actions and projects from previous years includes: shoreline cleanups, litter cleanups, nest box maintenance and guided public hikes, educational events and invasive plant removal, and stewardship activities.
Criteria
Evaluation of the nominations will consider the scope of the project or commitment, initiative and leadership, how far the actions reach, and sustainability for the future. Eligible volunteers and organizations can also nominate themselves.
Nominees do not need to be residents of Coquitlam, but their activities or projects should occur in Coquitlam or directly benefit our community.
Nominations are also encouraged for individuals who quietly work behind the scenes, volunteers who have dedicated their expertise and time for 20 or more years, and newcomers or those who only recently completed a project.
