COQUITLAM, B.C., January 30, 2024 – Coquitlam's Bylaw Enforcement and Animal Services Officers will be active in the community this year, encouraging local dogs to assist in training their human companions for the benefit of everyone's enjoyment in local parks.
A Guide to Training Your Human
In an effort to ensure Coquitlam parks remain user-friendly for all people and animals, Coquitlam Bylaw Enforcement and Animal Services Officers will be reminding dogs (and their humans) about three key responsibilities:
- Leash Up – Even if your dog is friendly and well-behaved, other dogs and people may find it scary to be approached by an off-leash dog. If you really want an off-leash experience, visit one of Coquitlam’s off-leash dog parks and trails. For more information, visit www.coquitlam.ca/offleash.
- Clean Up – Being a responsible dog owner means cleaning up after your pet. Even if the bag says "biodegradable" or "compostable", it won’t break down in the bushes. Please throw all dog waste into the garbage can, or take it home with you to flush.
- Licence Up – Not only is a valid dog licence the best way to reunite you and your dog if separated, but the funds help the animals at the Coquitlam Animal Shelter. Purchase or renew dog licences at www.coquitlam.ca/dogs.
If dogs and humans follow the rules, they might get rewarded with praise and treats. If people and their dogs don’t follow the rules, they might get a ticket from Bylaw Enforcement and Animal Services Officers.
About the Coquitlam Animal Shelter
Located at 500 Mariner Way, the Coquitlam Animal Shelter provides safe shelter to stray dogs, cats and other small animals. Annual dog licence fees help support the animals at the shelter. Unclaimed pets receive medical care, vaccinations, an identifying tattoo or microchip, and are spayed or neutered before being available for adoption. The shelter also provides a private dog boarding facility offering a safe and reliable home away from home where quality care is a priority. Learn more at www.coquitlam.ca/animalshelter;

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
