COQUITLAM, B.C., February 15, 2024 – A new, temporary community garden is coming to the City Centre neighbourhood and is set to open this spring.
Gardens That Support Our Community
Community gardens support local residents in many ways, from enhancing social connection, to increasing the diversity of plants on an underutilized plot of land. Gardens also encourage pollinators and beautify neighbourhoods, providing planted greenspace for community benefit.
The City Centre Community Garden is a temporary 50 plot garden set on the land at 1210 Pinetree Way, just north of City Centre Aquatic Complex. These new community garden plots will be filled by gardeners who were displaced by the removal of the plots at Town Centre Park due to the water main construction.
Construction of the new garden plots will begin mid-February and gardeners can expect to start planting by late spring 2024.
As part of the work involved to develop the garden, approximately 50 immature cottonwood and alder trees will be removed. To ensure no nests or nesting birds are disturbed during the process, all tree removal work will take place before the bird nesting window opens on March 1.
