COQUITLAM, B.C., Apr. 3, 2020 – Last month the City introduced one-way traffic and other measures to protect public health along the Coquitlam Crunch trail, but may need to consider closing the trail or implementing other restrictions if users don’t follow the rules.
Since late March, Crunch users have been required to go up the east staircase and come down the west one to ensure adequate distancing. Signs reminding users of the need to maintain physical distance are posted along the trail and City staff are stationed at the trail from 8 a.m. to dusk daily to help reinforce the safety measures.
And, while most of those using the Crunch are following the rules and maintaining a minimum distance of two metres (six feet), there are still some who are not getting the message.
Trail Status Will Rely on Responsible Use
At this time all Coquitlam parks and trails remain open to the public based on the ongoing advice of B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer that – with the right precautions – people should continue to get outside and exercise for both their physical and mental health.
And, since implementing the unidirectional flow and installing signage, the City has been encouraged to see those on the Coquitlam trail taking the necessary precautions. However, the situation is being monitored and the City is prepared to close its trails if users don’t use the trail responsibly. This includes:
- Only using the stairs in the designated one-way direction;
- Staying at least two metres (six feet) away from others not from their household;
- Walking in small groups of 2-3 and only with others from their household; and
- Staying home if they are sick.
