[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Closes Dog Parks in Response to COVID-19

In a further effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, effective immediately, all of Coquitlam's fenced off-leash dog parks will be closed.

COQUITLAM, B.C., March 23, 2020 – In a further effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, effective immediately, all of Coquitlam’s fenced off-leash dog parks will be closed.

While most members of the community are following the measures ordered by B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer, City officials continue to observe people congregating in groups, and others failing to use appropriate personal hygiene measures. These actions put our entire community at risk.

To date, Coquitlam has closed all indoor City facilities to the public, and also closed playgrounds, sport fields, sport courts, skateparks and park washrooms. Closures to park facilities came after staff observations and public concerns that park users were not maintaining social distancing as directed by the Provincial Health Officer.

Dog Walks on Leash Encouraged

Outdoor exercise is important for physical and mental health for you and your pet. Considering the extraordinary circumstances of the pandemic and the measures required to contain the virus, including closing dog parks, the best way to exercise your dog is walking on leash in neighbourhoods, open park spaces and trails. Be sure to maintain a social distance of two metres (or six feet) from others at all times.

What is Social Distancing?

B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer has directed everyone in the province to maintain a social distance to help curb the spread of the highly-contagious COVID-19 coronavirus. This means that when outside their homes, people should maintain a distance of at least two metres (or six feet) from others not living in their household.

Other ways to practice social distancing:

  • Where possible stay home
  • Limit activities outside your home, for example only get groceries once per week
  • Use online options to connect with others
  • Keep your hands at your side when possible
  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Cough into your sleeve or elbow
  • Avoid all social activities in large gatherings

For their mental and physical health, Coquitlam families are encouraged to enjoy the parks and trails throughout the community together with those from their household, while avoiding groups of more than two or three and maintaining social distancing at all times.

Parents are also urged to reinforce the importance of social distancing with their children.
