COQUITLAM, B.C., October 19, 2024  City crews are working around the clock to manage the effects of a storm that began late Friday afternoon, bringing significant rainfall across the city.

In some areas, over 200 mm of rain fell within 24 hours, causing widespread flooding. As a result, residents are advised to avoid the following areas due to road closures and hazardous conditions:

  • Cedar Drive
  • Quarry Road
  • Town Centre Park
  • Mackin Park
  • Como Lake Park
  • Coquitlam Crunch

In addition to flooding, the City’s drainage and sanitary sewer systems are operating at full capacity in some low-lying areas. This has led to localized sewer overflows, which crews are actively addressing.

Proactive Work by City Crews

Public Works crews have been preparing for the storm and working around the clock to address storm-related issues. This includes:

  • Clearing critical catch basins and drainage intakes to ensure water can flow properly
  • Responding to sanitary sewer overflows and high-level alarms at key pump stations
  • Addressing localized flooding incidents across the city
  • Responding to a reported slide on Quarry Road, with teams assessing the situation

A dedicated nightshift crew will be on-site throughout the night to continue managing the impacts, ensuring that any emerging issues are addressed swiftly.

Coquitlam River Flood Warning

The BC River Forecast Centre has upgraded the Flood Watch for the Coquitlam River to a Flood Warning. The City is closely monitoring the river and residents are advised to avoid parks and trails near watercourses, such as rivers and streams.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
