[ARCHIVED] R&B and Indie Artists Wrap Up Summer Concert Series

Coquitlam Two powerful indie and R&B vocalists will share their uplifting original offerings in the final two dates of Coquitlam’s 2020 Summer Concert Series at Home.

COQUITLAM, B.C., Aug. 4, 2020 – Two powerful indie and R&B vocalists will share their uplifting original offerings in the final two dates of Coquitlam’s 2020 Summer Concert Series at Home.

Reformatted to an online setting this year, the popular free series wraps up with award-winning gospel and R&B artist Warren Dean Flandez on Aug. 7 and dynamic indie performer Sarah Wheeler and the Black Salt Sea on Aug. 14 at www.coquitlam.ca/summerconcerts

Viewers are encouraged to create Facebook watch parties, and follow the City’s Facebook and YouTube channels (@cityofcoquitlam) or RSVP to the Facebook event pages for updates and reminders.

Similar to the usual live version presented at Town Centre Park, this year’s six-part online series from July 10 to Aug. 14 has presented a range of talent and genres, including Latin, pop, country, indie and soul. Business support has also been incorporated this year, with different Coquitlam restaurants promoted along with the concerts.

Tune in Aug. 7 and 14

Despite their diverse styles, what links the series’ final two performers is their focus on honest, original music with a message.

The eclectic two-time Juno nominated and eight-time Gospel Music Association award-winning artist Warren Dean Flandez takes to the stage on Aug. 7, performing soulfully-charged, urban-infused tracks that are both inspirational and appealing to mainstream audiences.

With his newest full-length album Speak debuting at number one on the iTunes Inspirational Charts Top 100 and number 20 on the iTunes Overall Charts Top 100, Flandez is known for his wide vocal range and describes his music simply as “songs with purpose.”

Closing out the series on Aug. 14 is Sarah Wheeler and the Black Salt Sea, performing originals from the queer indie artist and cancer survivor who has been described in the media as “one of Vancouver’s punchiest indie singers” with “an effortlessly big voice which falls somewhere between Chrissie Hynde and Neko Case.”

Wheeler is known as a blazing live performer with an indomitable positive spirit. Her not-yet released album Revival – which she penned while fighting cancer – has an unforced honesty and message of positivity through dark times that is sure to resonate with listeners in the midst of the pandemic.

Each concert is about 30 minutes long. The shows are presented by Coquitlam Centre, produced by the City of Coquitlam and filmed by Hubcast Media Productions, and are available for viewing on-demand at www.coquitlam.ca/summerconcerts from 5 p.m. on the Friday concert date to the following Monday at 8 a.m. Coquitlam Centre also sponsors the City’s summer surveys.

Supporting Local Restaurants

Viewers are encouraged to make a night of it by ordering takeout or delivery from Coquitlam restaurants, and planning watch parties on Facebook or at home with their bubble.

To support local businesses during the pandemic, Coquitlam restaurants serving up takeout are being featured as part of this year’s concert series. Featured for the Aug. 7 and 14 concerts are La Ruota Pizzeria, Jugo Juice Coquitlam Centre, Hwang’s Kitchen, and C Market Roastery & Kitchen.

More local restaurants can be found at www.visitcoquitlam.ca.

Take the Survey and Win

Coquitlam residents who watch at least one broadcast of the 2020 Summer Concert Series have a chance to win one of three $50 Coquitlam Centre gift cards by taking a City survey at www.coquitlam.ca/summerconcerts before Aug. 28. Sponsored by Coquitlam Centre, the survey collects feedback to guide the planning of future City events and programs.
