The City of Coquitlam is reminding residents to stay at least 100 metres away from bears, following safety and traffic concerns at a local salmon-viewing spot.
COQUITLAM, B.C., Oct. 26, 2020 – The City of Coquitlam is reminding residents to stay at least 100 metres away from bears, following safety and traffic concerns at a local salmon-viewing spot.
Drivers stopping and pedestrians congregating to photograph bears feasting on salmon are not only putting themselves at risk by getting too close, but also causing road safety issues as they block traffic.
Bears are particularly active right now as they seek out food sources – including salmon returning to local creeks and rivers – to prepare for hibernation. While it’s an impressive sight, residents are strongly urged to keep at least 100 metres away from bears at all times, and to drive and park safely through salmon-viewing areas.
Safe Spots for Viewing Salmon
Safe spots for viewing salmon in Coquitlam this fall include:
- Hoy Creek at the hatchery or along the trail in Hoy Creek Linear Park;
- Scott Creek near Runnel Drive and Guildford Way; and
- Coquitlam River at the Oxbow Side Channel, Galette Park and Hockaday Park.
The City has posted a downloadable map of salmon-viewing locations, along with a scavenger hunt designed to help families have fun exploring nature, at www.coquitlam.ca/salmoncomehome.
Be Bear Smart this Fall
When out in the community, follow these tips to stay safe from bears:
- Keep dogs leashed and under control at all times (other than dog parks or designated off-leash trails);
- Do not approach the bear for photos, feed or antagonize it; and
- Stay at least 100 metres away and use binoculars or a telephoto lens for a close-up view.
If you come across a bear while on foot, do not scream, yell or run away. Stay calm and talk in a low, calm voice while backing away slowly, make yourself look big, and warn others you encounter while leaving the area.
Report wildlife that is aggressive or causing property damage to the Conservation Officer Service 24/7 reporting line at 1-877-952-7277.
