Check out some simple steps to help prevent burn injury during National Burn Awareness Week Feb. 7 – 13.
COQUITLAM, B.C., Feb. 4, 2021 – Coquitlam Fire/Rescue is reminding residents that National Burn Awareness Week is Sunday, Feb. 7 – Saturday, Feb. 13 and encouraging simple steps to help prevent burn injury.
Most burn injuries are preventable, yet they continue to be one of the leading causes of injury for children, and elderly and people with disabilities.
The theme for 2021 National Burn Awareness Week is Electrical Safety and Coquitlam Fire/Rescue is sharing the following electrical and cooking safety tips to prevent burns.
Electrical Safety
Electricity produces heat that not only causes fires, but also burns. Follow these simple steps to help prevent injury and fires.
- Plug major appliances directly in to a wall outlet - do not use extension cords or power bars.
- Only plug one heat-producing appliance in to an outlet at a time.
- Regularly check electrical cords for cracks or frays, loose or bare wire, and loose connections.
- Keep all electrical cords above rugs and carpets.
- Keep electrical appliances, devices and cords away from heat and water sources.
- Use light bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fixture.
Cooking Safety
Consider these simple steps to make the kitchen a safe place while cooking.
- Make your kitchen a kid-free zone while preparing hot meals or drinks.
- Use back burners whenever possible, and always turn the pot handles to the back of the stove.
- Be cautious around hot liquids and steam.
- Wear short- or tight-fitting sleeves when you cook.
