As the forecast calls for dropping temperatures, winds and likely snow, make sure you are prepared and ‘winter wise.’
COQUITLAM, B.C., Feb. 12, 2021 – As the Metro Vancouver forecast calls for dropping temperatures, winds and likely snow, Coquitlam residents are reminded to make sure they are prepared and ‘winter wise.'
There is potential for lingering arctic air and the increasing precipitation could result in heavy, wet snow and accumulations ranging from 5-15 cm. City crews have begun their winter response and will be working 24/7:
- Public Works crews have been out all week salting as necessary to prevent ice formation on roads.
- Effective Friday, Feb. 12 City crews will ramp up pre-salting on main roads and steep streets to keep the snow from accumulating for as long as possible.
- The City has 20 trucks outfitted with plows and sanders ready to go.
Parking Ban is in Effect
The ‘No Parking’ restriction has been activated, effective Friday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. Residents who live in these affected areas can sign up to get notified from the City when the restriction is declared. The City advises when the parking ban has been activated in the following ways:
The parking restriction will be lifted when the streets are clear of snow.
Parking Restrictions During Snow Events
Coquitlam has implemented a number of parking restrictions to help City crews to plow streets clear in order to make them safer for winter driving.
You can see maps of the streets with restrictions and the associated restriction at www.coquitlam.ca/winterwise - click on the blue tab labelled Parking Restrictions below the video on that webpage.
All residents are asked to follow the posted parking restrictions on their street and are encouraged to park in a driveway, garage, carport or other area of their private property. This action not only helps road crews, but also prevents drivers from having to dig out their vehicle, and ensures vehicles aren’t ticketed or towed.
Report Area of Concern
Residents can report any areas of snow concern through the Coquitlam Snow Response Request tool available at www.coquitlam.ca/winterwise. This tool enables information to be provided to City staff in real-time and facilitates a more efficient and effective response.
Please note during snow events, streets are plowed according to the City’s priority routes system focusing on primary roads (arterials, collectors, bus routes and access roads to schools) with local roads and lanes only being plowed as resources allow. Check out Captain Public Works explaining our priority routes.
Garbage Collection
In the event of hazardous road conditions due to snow and/or ice, there may be delays or a temporary cancellation of garbage and green cart collection. If your collection day is missed, bring your carts in off the street or lane and place them out again the following morning for collection. If trucks are still unable to collect, bring your carts in and place them out on your next scheduled collection day. Stay up-to-date with the latest garbage collection by signing up with ReCollect at www.coquitlam.ca/recollect.
Clear Catch Basins
If there is snow followed by warming temperatures, City crews will also ensure critical catch basins are cleared to allow the rain and melting snow to drain and prevent flooding. Residents are also encouraged to clear the catch basin in front of their home to help avoid flooding. Locate catch basins near your property by using this map tool.
Be Winter Wise
Coquitlam’s Winter Wise program kicks into gear each winter to minimize the impact of snow, ice, storms and colder temperatures. While the City works to keep roads safe and reduce service disruptions, residents are encouraged to do their part.
