COQUITLAM, B.C., Mar. 3, 2021 – About $97 million in roadwork and utility projects are under way in Coquitlam, including $37 million approved as part of the 2021 Capital Plan.
With construction season ramping up soon, Engineering and Public Works staff recently updated Council on projects planned for construction in 2021 and several large projects in the design phase. Projects include improvements to roads, sidewalks, pedestrian safety, and water and sewer services.
The $97 million budget approved to date is allocated toward a comprehensive program of roadwork and utility improvements throughout the community. This is in addition to $150 million currently under way this year for enhanced civic facilities, parks, fields and trail projects.
Street, Safety and Service Improvements
Transportation investments this year will include:
- Rehabilitating the Scott Creek Bridge deck on Lougheed Highway;
- Replacing the sound wall on Mariner Way;
- Upgrading neighbourhood street frontages on parts of Walls, Stewart and Delestre avenues with curbs, gutters, sidewalks, boulevards and lighting;
- Paving sections of Como Lake Avenue and United Boulevard;
- Upgrading 2 kilometres of sidewalk, 2.2 kilometres of watermain and 5.4 kilometres of paving on local streets north of Como Lake Avenue between Blue Mountain and Gatensbury streets;
- Improving pedestrian safety with new sidewalks on parts of Austin and Brunette avenues, and curb bulges on Pinetree Way at Lincoln Avenue and Douglas College;
- Adding a traffic signal on Como Lake Avenue at Montrose Street, near a planned redevelopment;
- Adding a connector multi-use path on United Boulevard from King Edward Street; and
- Continuing the City-wide LED streetlight conversions.
Utility projects in 2021 include the design of upgrades to the Foster Water Pump Station and Reservoir – which will improve pressure to homes near Mundy Park and maximize the water received from the Burnaby Mountain Reservoir – and sewer upgrades on North Road (Stoney Creek) and on Rochester Avenue near Maillardville Middle School and Rochester Park.
Northeast Coquitlam Projects
Work in Northeast Coquitlam this year will include road and utility services on City-owned lands in the Partington Creek neighbourhood, design and start of construction of Princeton Avenue in the future Burke Mountain Village, and various projects in the Cedar Drive/Partington Creek area, such as upgrades and expansion of sewers and drainage, environmental work and roadway improvements.
Construction in the Cedar Drive/Partington Creek area will begin in 2021 and last about three years. A detailed update is planned for later in March, and ongoing communications will take place with Burke Mountain property owners and other stakeholders.
Providing Important Amenities and Infrastructure During the Pandemic
Coquitlam continues to plan and build amenities and infrastructure for the present and future community needs, beyond the pandemic. This is made possible through long-term financial planning including the Five-Year Capital Plan for 2021-2025, as well as overall strong fiscal responsibility. Many of these projects are also funded outside of the municipal tax base through sources such as developer contributions.
