[ARCHIVED] Indoor Group Fitness Classes Cancelled but Many Options Available

Virtual Fitness Class Coquitlam has cancelled indoor adult group fitness classes until May 1, but continues to offer a variety of safe indoor and outdoor recreation options.

COQUITLAM, B.C., March 29, 2021 – Coquitlam has cancelled indoor adult group fitness classes until May 1, but continues to offer a variety of safe indoor and outdoor recreation options.

The City acted quickly to respond to today’s new orders from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, including a ban on all indoor group exercise, including low-intensity activities, until Apr. 19. Coquitlam immediately cancelled about 30 adult indoor fitness classes set to begin as early as this week and began to investigate which could be modified to an outdoor or virtual format.

All other indoor and outdoor recreation offerings continue, including other registered programs and scheduled drop-in timeslots at the City’s arena, pools and fitness centres.

Recreation Options for all Ages

Over the past year, Coquitlam’s recreation staff have continued to adapt programming to meet current health protocols while providing safe opportunities for children, youth, adults and seniors to stay healthy and active.

Some of April’s cancelled in-person fitness classes may transition to outdoors or a virtual format, held through Zoom. Virtual fitness has proved to be popular in Coquitlam, with more than 425 people signed up last week alone for the nine virtual fitness classes on offer.

Other virtual options include 50+ activity groups as well as programs for parents-and-tots, children and youth. To see what’s available, search keyword “virtual” at www.coquitlam.ca/registration. Free virtual activities and fitness can also be found at www.coquitlam.ca/spirit.

A variety of pre-registered drop-in activities also continue to be available through www.coquitlam.ca/registration, including parent-tot programs and timeslots for swimming, skating, sport courts and fitness centres.

The City’s Community Support and Recovery Plan continues to subsidize a temporary reduction in drop-in fees ($1 for child, youth and seniors, $2 for adults and $5 for families up to six).

Safety Remains the Priority

All activities – whether held indoors, outside or virtually – continue to adhere to current Provincial Health Officer orders, with modified access and protocols in place to ensure the safety of the public and staff. As in the case with the March 29 health order, the City remains ready to scale back or adjust programs and services at all times in the interest of public safety.

Other Options for Outdoor Fun

With more than 90 kilometres of trails and 3,400 acres of parks and green spaces, Coquitlam also offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Find a park near you at www.coquitlam.ca/parkfinder or learn about Coquitlam’s extensive trail system at www.coquitlam.ca/trails.

For a variety of free activities to enjoy in backyards or around the City, check out the Outdoor Activities section on the CoquitlamSPIRIT webpage at www.coquitlam.ca/spirit
