Magic, multicultural dancing, and music ranging from children’s rock to high-energy country are part of the packed entertainment lineup planned for Coquitlam’s online Canada Day celebrations tomorrow.
COQUITLAM, B.C., June 30, 2020 – Magic, multicultural dancing, and music ranging from children’s rock to high-energy country are part of the packed entertainment lineup planned for Coquitlam’s online Canada Day celebrations tomorrow.
Although the City will hold its 12th annual Coquitlam Celebrates Canada Day event online this year, the event will continue the tradition of showcasing local and Canadian performances and culture during the broadcast July 1 from noon to 7 p.m. at www.coquitlam.ca/canadaday. The video will remain online until Sunday evening.
What’s in Store for July 1
Coquitlam residents are encouraged to shop locally for their party food and supplies and then gather with their circle at home or in a local park to tune in to the City’s family-friendly broadcast, filled with non-stop performances, interactive activities and more.
Watch for these performers:
- Dani Black, a local 16-year-old award-winning singer-songwriter, performing O Canada;
- Maple Leaf Circus, leading the kick-off parade and hosting a series of circus-inspired demos;
- Will’s Jams, featuring JUNO nominee and children’s TV performer Will Stroet, known for his witty wordplay and catchy choruses;
- Heather Jolley Highland Dancers, which have kept the Scottish dance tradition alive in the Tri-Cities for more than 40 years;
- Vitaly, a master illusionist and magician who has mystified fans world-wide, including Las Vegas superstars Penn & Teller;
- Silk & Skins, a Pan-Asian musical collaboration of Uzume Taiko and Silk Road Music presenting original compositions and folk songs;
- Speed Control, Yukon-based recording artists performing riff-heavy, high-energy rock;
- Fame Art Dance, an Iranian contemporary dance troupe that uses dance to promote unity; and
- The Heels, a high-energy country trio known for its positivity, fun and flare.
The schedule of activities and entertainment includes (times are approximate):
- 12 – 1 p.m.: Maple Leaf Circus kick-off parade; opening remarks; O Canada led by Dani Black;
- 12:15 – 1 p.m.: Will’s Jams; and a face-painting demo by faceaballoonza!.
- 1 – 2 p.m.: Heather Jolley Highland Dancers; juggling workshop by Maple Leaf Circus; a scavenger hunt with Coquitlam Public Library; cartooning with Freckled Fox; a tin can lantern demo by Parks staff; bike safety and skills with the Tri-Cities Off Road Cycling Association; and vehicle tours by the RCMP and Coquitlam Fire & Rescue.
- 2 – 3 p.m.: Illusionist Vitaly; a hula hoop workshop by Maple Leaf Circus; a home heritage hunt by Coquitlam Heritage Society; crafts with Sage Foundation; a tin can craft with Place des Arts; and a virtual tour of the Coquitlam Animal Shelter.
- 3 – 4 p.m.: Silk & Skins instrumental quartet; a home obstacle course by Ruben’s Rukus; a virtual tour of the City Archives; and a tumbling workshop by Maple Leaf Circus.
- 4 – 5 p.m.: Speed Control rock band and microwave cooking with Youth Leadership of BC.
- 5 – 6 p.m.: Canada Day broadcast highlights and dinner break.
- 6 – 7 p.m.: Fame Art Group, Iranian dance and The Heels country band.
Fun Canadian facts, prize giveaways and welcomes from the Mayor, Councillors and local MPs and MLAs will also be interspersed among the activities.

Coquitlam residents who watch the online Canada Day festivities between July 1 and the evening of Sunday, July 5 have a chance to win a $100 Coquitlam Centre gift card by taking the City’s Canada Day survey at www.coquitlam.ca/canadaday following the broadcast. The survey ends July 15.

Those wishing to take their Canada Day celebration to a local park can take advantage of the free Wi-Fi available in many City parks (see map at www.coquitlam.ca/wifi). The free Wi-Fi allows Coquitlam residents to get outdoors and remain socially connected while being able to access information and enjoy Coquitlam Celebrates Canada Day, as well as participate in the City’s free CoquitlamSPIRIT and other virtual programming.
