[ARCHIVED] Safe In-person Fun in Store for Coquitlam’s 2021 Youth Week

Youth playing basketball Youth can sign up for free and safe in-person activities taking place from May 1 to 7.

COQUITLAM, B.C., April 28, 2021 – Coquitlam youth can sign up now for more than 20 free and safe in-person activities taking place during Youth Week May 1 to 7.

The City has planned a full week of pre-registered activities at recreation facilities and around the community for Youth Week, an annual celebration of youth and their contributions.

Free games, arts and crafts, wellness activities, swimming, skating and more are planned, with COVID-19 safety protocols in place. Details and registration links can be found at www.coquitlam.ca/youthweek

What’s in Store for 2021 Youth Week

Daily pre-registered activities are running May 1 to 7 at locations including Pinetree and Poirier Community Centres, Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (PSLC) and City Centre Aquatic Complex (CCAC). Most are aimed at the 13-18 age group, with a few opportunities for ages 11 to 14.

The fun kicks off May 1 with a basketball contest, hip hop workshop, youth-only skating and swimming, and a late-night takeover at PSLC with various activities.

A week-long scavenger hunt for ages 11 to 18 also kicks off on May 1. Interested youth who want to be entered to win a prize must register online by May 1 at www.coquitlam.ca/youthweek. Once registered, clues will be emailed each day for items at different Coquitlam locations, where participants will take selfies and submit them for prizes at the end of the week. Youth can participate with friends or on their own.

Youth Week activities continue daily, with a pre-teen lounge and stick, ring and puck games on May 2, an acrylic pour art class on May 3, a financial literacy workshop on May 4, and a spa night on May 5. Join the Park Spark team for fun activities and games at Youth Pop Ups in local parks May 1 – 8.

Things gear up again on the evening of May 6, with offerings such as a mental health workshop, a painting and gardening session, and a DIY spa and tie dye night. Youth Week wraps up May 7 with another tie dye night, game show contest and youth swim.

All activities require pre-registration through www.coquitlam.ca/registration.

Other Opportunities for Coquitlam Youth

In addition to the free Youth Week activities, young people ages 11 to 18 in Coquitlam can enjoy pre-registered drop-in swimming, skating, weight room and sport court sessions for only $1, thanks to the temporary reduction in drop-in fees subsidized by the City's Community Support and Recovery Plan. (Children and seniors also pay $1, adults pay $2 and family groups of up to four pay $5.)

Youth can also take part in pre-registered drop-ins at Coquitlam’s two youth centres and sign up for registered multi-day programs in May and June, including sports, arts and fitness at www.coquitlam.ca/registration.

Information about youth centres and other offerings is posted at www.coquitlam.ca/youth.
