[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Offers Options for the Community to Mark July 1

Lafarge Lake O Canada Newsflash

COQUITLAM, B.C., June 17, 2021 – July 1 in Coquitlam will include ways to participate in community spirit and reflect on Canada’s past, present and future.

This Canada Day, the City is encouraging residents to reflect on the country’s complicated colonial history with Indigenous communities and consider our nation’s strengths and its flaws, as we strive collectively to learn from our past and do better in the future.  Some educational resources for individuals and families are posted at www.coquitlam.ca/canadaday for further study and insight.

This year’s adapted Canada Day activities will include online content offering cultural sharing, entertainment, activities and more; an in-person experience for registered participants; and resources and information to further the community’s learning about Canada’s Indigenous cultures and history.

Promoting Community Spirit, Diversity and Reflection

Whether recognized in person or virtually, Canada Day in Coquitlam is a time to acknowledge community spirit, diversity and inclusion – values that bond the City’s residents.

These themes will be woven through a series of pre-recorded videos available for viewing at www.coquitlam.ca/canadaday  from July 1 at 9 a.m. until July 5 at 8 a.m. Viewers will be able to choose from segments including a cultural welcome from kʷikʷəƛ̓əm Chief Ed Hall and a variety of entertainment, family activities, try-it demos, multicultural performances and more.

In-Person Experience Part of July 1

This year’s in-person event will include a unique, physically-distanced drive-through experience. Open to registered vehicles only, there are four hundred timeslots available in which to participate on July 1. Along the way, participants will take in a live DJ, roving characters, community groups and dance performances.

A $2 registration includes a car decorating starter kit with items such as window markers, ribbons, Canada Day decals, streamers, a QR code to watch an online car decorating tutorial and more. Visit www.coquitlam.ca/canadaday to register.

Support Local Eateries

Support local this Canada Day. Ten Coquitlam restaurants are offering specials to help mark the occasion. Confirmed restaurant partners are Après Kitchen & Bar, Chachi’s, Coffee + Vanilla, Coquitlam Grill, Doughnut Love, Legend House, Mariner Brewing, Morning Tide Eatery, Pasta Polo & Brick Oven Pizza, and Singapore Hawker.

A Summer of Safe Fun

Later this summer, the Summer Concert Series kicks off on July 17 with both a pre-registered and online experience, and the Kaleidoscope Arts Festival returns in August.

Event information will be posted on the event webpages at www.coquitlam.ca/summerconcerts and www.coquitlam.ca/kaleidoscope.

Corporate Partners Support Community Events

Coquitlam Centre is this year’s Presenting Partner for the Summer Concert Series, as well as the City’s Summer Survey Partner, sponsoring the customer survey that will follow each of the events.

Coquitlam’s Canada Day program is made possible through the generous support of the Government of Canada, Coquitlam Centre, The Tri-City News, TransLink and Douglas College.
