The Lansdowne Drive parking lot at the Crunch will be closed near the end of June as it undergoes construction over the summer.
COQUITLAM, B.C., June 22, 2021 – The Lansdowne Drive parking lot at the Crunch will be closed near the end of June as it undergoes construction over the summer.
During construction, visitors to the Crunch are asked to consider other forms of transit to the trail, and to use alternate parking lots at Runnel Drive or partway up the trail at the Bramble Park courts on Panorama Drive.
Additionally, FortisBC will also be conducting maintenance on the pipeline running along the trail and there will be a trail detour for a period of up to four weeks beginning July 26. Traffic control personnel will be on site directing pedestrian traffic where needed.
Both projects require warmer and drier summer weather to complete the work, and therefore the City has been working with FortisBC to reduce the impacts to trail users and neighbours as much as possible.
Summer Construction Part of Phased Improvements at the Crunch
The upcoming improvements to the parking lot are part of an ongoing phased plan to expand the popular Coquitlam trail’s capacity. The Lansdowne Drive gravel access road and parking lot will be paved and expanded to 60 parking stalls, reducing on-street parking demand. Additionally, a digital sign will provide real-time available stall counts to help reduce idling and in-and-out traffic.
As part of this work, a new paved pathway will be constructed on the west side of the access road, and new gravel trails will connect the parking lot to the existing Crunch trails. New trail improvements will provide paved connections closer to the recently constructed crosswalk at Guildford Way.
Alternate Ways to Get to the Crunch this Summer
While improvements are underway, parking will be impacted and trail users are encouraged to use other forms of transit:
- Start your warm-up by walking to the trail.
- Take transit – several bus stops are located at various entry points of the Crunch.
- Carpool with friends.
With the Lansdowne Drive parking lot closed, those who require a vehicle to travel to the Crunch should avoid parking along Lansdowne and seek alternative parking locations at the Runnel Drive parking lot and the Bramble Park courts parking lot on Panorama Drive.
Consider Neighbours When Visiting the Crunch
With over 240 meters of elevation gain, the Crunch Trail in Northwest Coquitlam is a popular fitness destination that sees as many as 52,000 users per month during peak season. Increased use during the pandemic has intensified traffic, parking and safety concerns for residents of the area. Visitors are asked to respect the neighbourhood, obey all traffic laws, cross streets safely and use the parking lots off Runnel Drive or at Bramble Park. Visit www.coquitlam.ca/crunch for more information about the trail and amenities.
