[ARCHIVED] Enjoy the Outdoors this Summer with CoquitlamSPIRIT

Coquitlam Spirit Fishing

COQUITLAM, B.C., July 20, 2021 – Go fishing, work out at the park, plan an outdoor scavenger hunt and more this summer, with the help of CoquitlamSPIRIT’s online library of outdoor activities.

As part of this year’s Coquitlam in Bloom campaign, the City is encouraging residents to make the most of their summer by spending time outside – whether at local parks and trails or their own backyards and balconies. As a starting point, residents can find fun crafts, fitness and other activities in the Outdoors section at www.coquitlam.ca/spirit.

Ideas to Get You Outside

The City plans a variety community engagement and beautification activities each year under the umbrella of Coquitlam in Bloom (CiB) as part of its participation in the national Communities in Bloom civic pride and beautification program.

With the emphasis on outdoor fun in this year’s CiB program, Coquitlam is pointing residents to ideas and opportunities provided through CoquitlamSPIRIT, the online toolkit the City developed to help residents stay engaged, entertained, fit and connected through the pandemic.

Find these activities in CoquitlamSPIRIT’s Outdoors file at www.coquitlam.ca/spirit:

  • The Parks team’s new Marvelous Machines videos about tractors, mowers and other machines that keep City parks healthy and clean;
  • Bloom of the Week, which highlights a different flower each week and encourages residents to post photos of their own gardens;
  • Information about local trails and fishing holes;
  • Ideas for outdoor scavenger hunt, photo hunt or rock garden;
  • Garden mocktails and fitness at the park videos; and
  • Fun outdoor selfie ideas, such as hugging a tree.

Content is updated regularly so check back for new opportunities.

Other Coquitlam in Bloom Activities

Through its annual participation in Communities in Bloom, Coquitlam has earned a number of awards at the provincial, national and international level in a friendly competition against similar-sized cities. Last year, the City brought home special achievement awards for Environmental Action and Youth Involvement (The Pollinator Project).

Visit www.coquitlam.ca/cib to learn about this year’s activities, designed to encourage residents to engage in their community and get outdoors:

  • Hope is Growing – Plant yellow flowers, vegetables and other plants in your home’s garden or planters to recognize the international colour of hope, then register at www.hopeisgrowing.ca and share photos of your garden on social media with the hashtag #hopeisgrowing and #Coquitlam for a chance to win prizes and earn recognition for your hometown. The City is also planting its own yellow Hope Gardens with the help of staff and volunteers. To get involved, learn how to become a Park Spark volunteer at www.coquitlam.ca/parkspark or contact parkspark@coquitlam.ca.
  • Promote pollinators – Support and learn about the health and diversity of pollinators through activities such as pollinator-friendly seed giveaways, pop-up selfie stations, park signs with fun facts, and a community fence-painting project to beautify local parks.
  • Coquitlam Munch – Visit Austin Heights to enjoy and take home samples from the edible flower, herb and vegetable planters maintained by area businesses. Learn more at www.austinheights.ca/coquitlam-munch.
