[ARCHIVED] Additional Swimming Options Provided During CCAC Shutdown

Family swimming at Eagle Ridge Pool Swimmers will have extra options in Coquitlam when the City Centre Aquatic Complex (CCAC) closes Sept. 7 to Oct. 3 for annual maintenance.

COQUITLAM, B.C., Aug. 31, 2021 – Swimmers will have extra options in Coquitlam when the City Centre Aquatic Complex (CCAC) closes Sept. 7 to Oct. 3 for annual maintenance.

This year, in addition to Eagle Ridge Pool, the City will be keeping Spani Pool open throughout the CCAC maintenance shutdown to provide more opportunities for local pool users.

Although the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (PSLC) pool will be available in September and open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily as of Sept. 7, Spani and Eagle Ridge will be options for those who enjoy swimming outdoors and want to avoid crowds. Extra volume is expected at PSLC given that it is one of the few indoor swimming facilities in the region open in September, when many municipalities conduct their facility maintenance shutdowns.

Maintenance Program Protects City Assets

Coquitlam conducts annual shutdowns of its pool facilities for important maintenance that is difficult to complete when the buildings are in use.

The closures keep staff and the public safe, equipment running properly, and City assets functioning for as long as possible. Annual tasks typically include deep cleaning and critical equipment maintenance.

Work this year at CCAC will include slide repairs, servicing of the moveable floor and pool mechanical systems, resurfacing of changeroom floors, tiling in the lobby and lobby washrooms, and regrouting the leisure pool, hot tub and shower walls.

CCAC Expansion Project Nearing Completion

The shutdown comes as a major renovation and expansion at CCAC nears its end. The CCAC pool and updated lobby are slated to reopen Oct. 4, followed by the opening of the new expanded fitness centre later in October. In total, the project is adding 250 square metres (2,700 square feet) of new space and renovating 1,050 square metres (11,300 square feet) of existing space at the CCAC, including the multi-purpose room, flexible meeting space, the fitness centre and administration area. For details, visit www.coquitlam.ca/CCAC.

Toonie Swims Return to Outdoor Pools

Anyone can swim for $2 at Coquitlam’s outdoor pools starting Sept. 7. The temporary reduced drop-in rates in effect at CCAC and PSLC during the pandemic will end Sept. 7 as services and operations return to normal levels. The reduced drop-in rates were subsidized through the City’s Community Support and Recovery Plan, the City’s dedicated pandemic-relief program, to support safe activities when options were limited.

The City’s ONE PASS program is relaunching Sept. 2 with new options. The pass is valid at all indoor Coquitlam recreation facilities for drop-in indoor aquatics, arena, fitness and gym programs. The ONE PASS program excludes outdoor pools.

Keeping You Safe Amid Changing Protocols

All City facilities and recreation offerings comply with COVID-19 health protocols. Programs and services may be adjusted based on new direction from the Provincial Health Officer (PHO) and other pandemic impacts; program registrants will be advised of changes that affect them.

Based on recent PHO orders, masks are required indoors for anyone age 12 and older (removal permitted during sports and fitness activities) and proof of a first vaccination will be required at all Coquitlam indoor facilities as of Sept. 13. The City is awaiting information from the PHO on how this new requirement will be implemented, and will keep the public informed as details are provided. Please refer to www.coquitlam.ca/covid19 for updates.
