[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Will Recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Indigenous Art

COQUITLAM, B.C., Sept. 8, 2021 – On Sept. 30, 2021, Coquitlam will honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to acknowledge the impact of residential schools on Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Similar to federal and provincial public agencies, the City is honouring the day to provide our community the opportunity to recognize and commemorate the tragic legacy of residential schools.

A Time to Reflect and Commit

A day for quiet reflection or community engagement, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a chance to commit to reconciliation, and move forward with steps to acknowledge, educate and remove barriers. A day where we honour the survivors, families and communities who continue to live with the ongoing trauma of Canada’s residential school system.

Federally and Provincially Recognized

Coquitlam’s decision follows the legislation passed by the federal government in June 2021 to recognize Sept. 30, 2021 as a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. As a result, many civic facilities in Coquitlam will be closed or operate with reduced hours. In honouring this day, Coquitlam encourages residents to reflect on Canada and B.C.’s history with Indigenous Peoples, and to consider what is necessary to work towards truth and reconciliation.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Coquitlam

In step with the evolving understanding taking place in Canada and around the world, Coquitlam has strengthened its focus on promoting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the City’s work and in the community at large. Complementary to this is the City’s acknowledgement of efforts in support of Truth and Reconciliation. Both seek to build an equitable and inclusive society for all by addressing the inherent injustices and biases that hinder and harm some people while benefiting others.
