COQUITLAM, B.C., Sept. 21, 2021 – Watch street dancers battle it out at Town Centre Park on Sunday, Sept. 26 – and learn a few moves yourself – as Coquitlam celebrates Culture Days.

Some of the best street dancers in Metro Vancouver will face off in three high-energy exhibition dance battles from 2 to 4 p.m. on the TD Community Plaza stage, hosted by Kevin ‘Shazam’ Li and Alyssa ‘Luscious Brown’ Amarshi.

Featuring exciting moves, crowd participation and a music jam with DJ Ice B, this free event is being held as part of Culture Days, a national celebration of arts and culture. Modified to reflect current provincial health orders, this year’s Culture Days program will take place outside.

Litefeet, Tutting and More

The street dance battle will run rain or shine, with no registration required. Six accomplished street dancers will showcase a variety of different styles through battles and cyphers – when competitors take turns dancing inside a circle.

Representing the Diamonds in the Rough dance crew, Natasha Gorrie will take on Hannah Henney in the litefeet street dance style, hailing from Harlem, New York. Shazam and Vance Driver will be tutting – involving intricate arm, hand and finger movements – while Anwar Ali and Rajan ‘Illest’ Sandhu will battle in hip hop and open styles.

After the battles, audience members of all ages and skill levels will be invited to try out some introductory street dance moves, including litefeet steps like The Bad One and Tone Wop, some easy tuts and hip hop foundational moves: bounce, rock and groove.
