[ARCHIVED] Park and Public Space Upgrades Roll Out in Coquitlam

Robinson Cemetery Improvements 2021 Newsflash

COQUITLAM, BC, Sept. 27, 2021 – Coquitlam rolled out a number of upgrades this summer to parks, recreation and public amenities, and residents can expect more in the months ahead.

Through its approved $356-million Five-Year Capital Plan for 2021-2025, Coquitlam delivered and managed projects over the summer intended to enhance services and City public spaces, including recreation centres, the cemetery, parks and trails throughout the community.

Providing Opportunities to Connect and Be Active

The ongoing investments in new and enhanced facilities, parks, fields and trails help ensure the City can continue to provide high-quality services as the community grows.

The improved spaces also provide safe opportunities for residents to stay engaged, active and healthy, which continues to be important as the pandemic carries on. Recent work includes:

  • Coquitlam Crunch Trail – Paving and expansion of the parking lot to include 60 parking stalls, a digital sign showing real-time parking availability, and connecting trail improvements (completed);
  • Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex – New Arena 3 changerooms for players and officials, including showers and washrooms, and a mural on the exterior (completed);
  • Durant Linear Park – New stairs climbing the park’s 110-foot elevation (coming this fall);
  • Nestor Park – New playground equipment, surfacing and seating (completed);
  • City Centre Aquatic Complex - lobby renovations and fitness area expansion (coming this fall);
  • Mundy Park Washrooms – Two universal accessible stalls with water fountain near the Chilko Drive entrance (coming this fall);
  • Robinson Cemetery – New burial options, improved traffic flow, improved connector pathways and other enhancements (coming this fall);
  • Buchanan Square – Replacement of the parkade roof and updates to public amenities including lighting, games and seating (completed) and new shade structure (coming this fall);
  • Town Centre Park Washrooms – Two universal accessible stalls at the southwest end of Lafarge Lake behind Evergreen Cultural Centre (coming this fall); and
  • Cottonwood Park – New sport court, activity and parkour area (coming this fall).

Work is also wrapping up on the new Burke Mountain Discovery Centre, set to open this fall with the licensed Ibex Café + Kitchen run by the Beanery Coffeehouse & Eatery operators.

Major Projects In Progress

Some of the major projects now in progress and scheduled for completion in 2022 include:

  • A 5,100-square-metre (55,000-square-foot) YMCA facility, community policing station and park-and-ride in Burquitlam;
  • The 2,000-square-metre (22,000-square-foot) Place Maillardville Community Centre replacement; and
  • Major upgrades to amenities, lighting, plantings and gathering spaces along Town Centre Park’s Lafarge Lake loop trail.

Providing Important Community Amenities

Coquitlam continues to plan and build amenities for current and future community needs. This is made possible through long-term financial planning, including the Five-Year Capital Plan for 2021-2025, as well as overall strong fiscal responsibility. Many City projects are also funded outside of the municipal tax base through sources such as developer contributions.
