FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Dec. 16, 2021 – Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam have achieved key milestones in the planning of the Fremont Connector – including, notably, completion of the preliminary design and alignment.
The two cities have been working closely together to plan the 4.7-kilometre arterial road that will link north Port Coquitlam with northeast Coquitlam to meet current and future transportation needs in both communities. While the Fremont Connector has been identified in the Official Community Plans and transportation plans of both cities for many years, the new need for the route continues to grow as more homes and development come to the area.
“The Fremont Connector has been considered for decades and it’s very significant to see this important step forward on this critical intermunicipal project,” said Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West. “Our residents and businesses in north Port Coquitlam will welcome a new north-south transportation alternative that will ease traffic in other parts the road network, including Coast Meridian, Prairie and Cedar Drive.”
“As neighbours we often work together on issues of mutual interest, and this is one of many examples of collaboration between our two cities,” said Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart. “This project will bring important road and active transportation improvements to support Metro Vancouver’s northeast sector. Residents and businesses on both sides of our border will benefit.”
Design at Preliminary Stage
The preliminary design for Fremont Connector consists of two travel lanes with intersection improvements and an adjacent multi-use pathway for pedestrians and cyclists.
The road’s alignment will follow the existing Fremont Street road allowance from the east end of Victoria Drive south to Lincoln Avenue. From Lincoln, it will then continue south along the existing road alignments for Devon Road, Prairie Avenue and Burns Road to the completed southern section of the Fremont Connector, which links to Lougheed Highway and the Mary Hill Bypass.
More details will be provided to the public during the community engagement process planned for 2022.
Next Steps
Public consultation, design and permitting will begin in 2022, and continue into 2023/2024 with construction anticipated to begin in 2024/2025. As the detailed design progresses, the cities will seek provincial and federal infrastructure grant funding for the project.
The cities will continue to share project updates with the public as more details are finalized. For more information, visit portcoquitlam.ca/fremont and coquitlam.ca/fremont.
