[ARCHIVED] Free Garden Compost Available for Coquitlam Residents May 7

Hands holding mulch Coquitlam residents can get a jump start on their spring planting on May 7 with a free bag of compost and a discounted composter from the City.

COQUITLAM, B.C., April 27, 2022 – Coquitlam residents can get a jump start on their spring planting on May 7 with a free bag of compost and a discounted composter from the City.

To celebrate International Compost Awareness Week May 1 to 7, the City will be giving away a free 32-litre bag of compost to Coquitlam residents while supplies last. Each household can also purchase up to four composters for $28 each, including tax, on May 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Austin Service Centre at 500 Mariner Way. Proof of residency will be required and only cash will be accepted for the composters.

Composting Supports Waste Diversion

The event supports Coquitlam’s new Environmental Sustainability Plan by minimizing waste generation and increasing the diversion of organic materials from the residential waste stream.

Using compost is earth-friendly—it’s made from diverted material that might otherwise go to the landfill, provides nutrient-rich soil fertilizer for plants and helps retain soil moisture, reducing the need for watering.

The compost being handed out May 7 was created with green waste from Coquitlam residents’ Green Carts—a great example of waste diversion. Coquitlam residents that receive the City’s curbside collection service diverted 71% of their waste to recycling and composting in 2020, which is higher than the regional rate of 64%.

It’s important to separate waste correctly and only place organics in the Green Cart. Contaminants like plastics bags—even ones labelled compostable or biodegradable—interfere with the composting process.

Go to www.coquitlam.ca/greencarts for a handy Waste Wizard search engine and other tips on what does and doesn’t go into Green Carts.

Composting at Home

Households with considerable amounts of yard waste can create their own source of free compost with a backyard composter. In addition to attending the May 7 event, Coquitlam residents may purchase discounted composters from the City by calling 604-927-3500 or emailing wastereduction@coquitlam.ca.
