COQUITLAM, B.C., Aug. 16, 2022 – Summer is sticking around in Coquitlam with Environment and Climate Change Canada issuing a heat warning for this week.
The weather pattern includes not only temperatures in the low 30s, but also the possibility for thunderstorms later in the week.
Where to Cool Off in Coquitlam
There are many ways to stay cool in Coquitlam:
Spray parks will be operating on extended hours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (except for Town Centre Park and Blue Mountain Park which will open at 10 a.m.). Misting stations have also been set up from 1 – 9 p.m. at the following locations:
- Spirit Square (off Burlington Drive, opposite Coquitlam City Hall)
- Mundy Park (off Hillcrest Street, between the playground and picnic shelters)
- Town Centre Park (TD Community Plaza area and by the Percy Perry Stadium)
Don’t Let our Parks go up in Smoke
The extended warm weather we have been experiencing means that Coquitlam’s parks are starting to look a little dry. We ask residents and park users to take steps that can both reduce and limit the risk of fire by following these simple tips:
- There is no smoking or vaping in parks at any time – people caught smoking may face a $500 fine.
- Do not litter cigarette butts – doing so can result in a $150 fine.
- Outdoor burning and campfires are not allowed.
- Watch for bans on using barbeques.
- Report any signs of smoke or fire by calling 9-1-1 immediately.
More tips and information are available at www.coquitlam.ca/summerfiresafety.
Stay Safe and Plan Ahead During Extreme Heat
- Avoid activities that require lots of effort, or exercise during the daytime when the weather is hottest.
- Stay hydrated – alcohol-free, caffeine-free and sugar-free drinks are best.
- Seek shaded areas such as parks and trails. To find park locations near you, visit www.coquitlam.ca/parkfinder.
- Check on people at risk – ensure elderly neighbours and those with accessibility challenges or chronic illnesses are not showing signs of heat related illness, and get them to a cool space or seek medical attention if required.
