[ARCHIVED] Extra Yard Trimming Collection Ends May 11 in Coquitlam

Carts set out at the curb Coquitlam green thumbs only have one more week to set out unlimited extra yard waste at the curb for free pickup this spring.

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 4, 2023 – Coquitlam green thumbs only have one more week to set out unlimited extra yard waste at the curb for free pickup this spring.

The City will wrap up its spring Seasonal Unlimited Yard Trimmings program on May 11, with another opportunity coming this fall. Coquitlam collects unlimited extra yard trimmings for six weeks at the start and end of the growing season from households that pay the Garbage Fee on their annual utility bill.

2023 is the last year that dates will be printed in the Collection Calendar. As weather patterns continue to change, Seasonal Unlimited Yard Trimming collection periods will be announced closer to collection dates to more closely align with environmental considerations. Dates and information are posted at coquitlam.ca/YardTrimmings and on Curbside Collection, the City’s collection reminder app.

Last Chance for Extra Spring Yard Waste Pickup

Until May 11, Coquitlam households may use the following options to set out extra yard waste at the curb along with their Green Carts on their regular collection day:

  • Garbage cans labelled with Yard Trimmings stickers, available for free pickup from the Engineering counter at Coquitlam City Hall or the City Centre and Poirier Public libraries;
  • Kraft paper bags; or
  • Tied bundles – branches must be less than 7.5 centimeter (3 inches) in diameter and 1 meter (3 feet) in length.

Reminder, extra yard waste is picked up by a different truck than Green Carts and collection may be later in the day. If it is not picked up by 7:30 p.m., contact Coquitlam’s collection contractor the next morning: Waste Connections of Canada, 604-636-3520 or cityofcoquitlam@wasteconnections.com. Uncollected yard waste may only be left at the curb overnight if it is not inside a City Green Cart.

Know the Rules

  • Sod, rocks, soil and plastic bags are not accepted.
  • Reduce wildlife attractants and only place food scraps in the City-issued Green Cart – do not place food in kraft bags or Yard Trimmings cans.
  • City-issued carts may not be set out before 5:30 a.m. on collection days, even if the Green Cart contains only yard trimmings (fines may apply, per Solid Waste Bylaw No. 4679).
  • Each bag, can or bundle of extra yard trimmings must weigh less than 20 kilograms (44 pounds).
  • Yard trimmings can not block sidewalks, laneways or streets.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-kwuh-tlum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
