COQUITLAM, B.C., May 8, 2023 – As the weather warms up, there are many ways to cool down in Coquitlam including free access to ten spray parks, Blue Mountain Wading Pool, fun pop-up park events, $2 swims at Eagle Ridge Pool and more resident access to Coquitlam’s Bettie Allard YMCA.

A significant renovation and expansion of Spani Pool in Mundy Park means the pool will be closed this summer while the City works on construction of a new leisure pool, play area, warming pool and more for summer 2024.

To ensure Coquitlam residents and visitors still have many opportunities for swimming and water play, the City is offering the following:

  • Early opening of Eagle Ridge Pool (2689 Guildford Way) - May 1 for aquatic user groups and June 3 for the public; public admission is only $2.
  • The annual maintenance closure of the pool at Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.) has been rescheduled to the fall to ensure a full schedule of drop-in swimming, aquafit and swimming lessons throughout the summer.
  • City Centre Aquatic Complex, (1210 Pinetree Way) will offer a robust schedule of drop-in swimming, aquafit and swimming lessons, as usual, throughout the summer season.
  • Ten no-cost spray parks located throughout the city, including Sheffield Spray Park, which opened in 2022, as well as the Blue Mountain Wading Pool, which is also free to users.
  • Free pop-up park events at Spirit Square on July 22 and Mundy Park on July 23 will include an inflatable water slide, slip and slide and other fun activities.
  • For only $25 Coquitlam’s Summer Child & Youth Pass provides unlimited access for those under 18 to Coquitlam’s drop-in activities, including indoor and outdoor pools from June 16 to Sept. 4. Passes go on sale May 23 with info available at coquitlam.ca/SummerPass.

Coquitlam’s Bettie Allard YMCA Offers Additional Swim Hours for Coquitlam Residents

Coquitlam residents continue to benefit from the City’s partnership with the YMCA through the expansion of the Coquitlam Resident Access Rate hours for aquatics at the new the Coquitlam Bettie Allard YMCA. This means you can now enjoy more hours of swimming and family fun at affordable rates that align with City of Coquitlam drop-in pricing.

Coquitlam residents’ aquatic access under the Resident Access Rate will increase from 30 hours per week to 41 hours per week in June, and to 51 hours per week in July and August. This includes the lap pool for lane swimming and public swim, as well as the warm water pool and hydro pool for family play, therapy and fitness.

Visit gv.ymca.ca/coquitlam-resident-access-rate to learn more about the schedule and rates.

Financial Assistance Available for Recreation

It is now easier than ever to access financial support for Coquitlam’s recreation services. The City’s Financial Assistance for Recreation program is more user-friendly with a much simpler application process and income verification, and more flexibility than ever. Each year, qualifying Coquitlam residents will receive 50 free drop-in visits plus a $225 credit they can use for an expanded range of admissions, passes, programs, lessons, exam fees, supplies, rentals and more. About the Spani Pool Renovation and Expansion

Spani Outdoor Pool is over 50 years old and will be undergoing extensive renovation and expansion starting in spring 2023 and completing for summer 2024. The new renovated outdoor pool will be designed for accessibility, sustainability and usability, and will include many new amenities including a leisure pool with shallow beach entry, splash area and lazy river, a new warming pool, and new change rooms and washrooms.

The project is made possible in part through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program’s (ICIP) Community, Culture, and Recreation Infrastructure Stream. Under the program, the Government of Canada is investing over $2.41 million, with the Province of British Columbia contributing over $2.01 million.

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-kwuh-tlum) meaning Red Fish Up the River. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the sq̓əc̓iy̓aɁɬ təməxʷ (Katzie), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
