COQUITLAM, B.C., Sept. 17, 2020 – Construction will begin shortly on new public washrooms at the southwest end of Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam’s Town Centre Park.
Council has approved the final plans for the new washrooms, which will be built on the east-facing exterior of Evergreen Cultural Centre with easy access from the surrounding trails. Part of major upgrades planned for the 1.2-kilometre lake loop trail and surrounding area, the new washrooms are anticipated to be ready for public use by spring 2021.
New Washroom Features
The project will bring much-needed exterior washrooms to the popular walking route and south end of the park. Building features include:
- Two universal and fully accessible stalls, each with their own entrance, toilet, sink and folding change table;
- An exterior drinking fountain and water bottle filler;
- Wayfinding signs in the surrounding area to direct trail users to the washrooms; and
- Lighting to enhance visibility, surveillance and safety.
The construction will have no impact on nearby trail use or Evergreen Cultural Centre operations.
The $425,000 budget for the new washrooms will be covered through the Town Centre Park Lake Loop improvements fund, financed by developer fees.
Improvements Guided by Park Master Plan
The new washrooms are part of the 20-year Town Centre Park Master Plan (TCPMP), adopted in 2018 to guide the park’s development.
Projects related to TCPMP to date have included improvements to the festival lawn in 2019, along with work this year on a new plaza with seating, washroom and servery building, and further enhancements to the lawn, gardens, trails and lighting.
Future upgrades include improvements to the lake loop and surrounding area – a total area of 23 acres – that will bring new lighting, gathering spaces, plantings, signage, and other features over the next two years.
