[ARCHIVED] Coquitlam Recreation Adapts to Latest Public Health Orders

News Flash Nov. Reg The City of Coquitlam is making further adjustments to its Recreation programming in order to continue to provide safe fitness options for the community.

COQUITLAM, B.C., Nov. 20, 2020 – Following the updated Order of B.C.’s Provincial Health Officer on Nov. 19, the City of Coquitlam is making further adjustments to its Recreation programming in order to continue to provide safe fitness options for the community.

Programming changes include extending the Nov. 10 cancellation of high-intensity indoor fitness activities to the New Year, and introducing some new registered virtual group fitness classes as well as outdoor spin classes.

Some low-intensity activities, such as dance programs and chair yoga, have now resumed. And, pending updated guidance from health officials, staff are working to reintroduce other low-intensity options on a pre-registered, drop-in basis.

Recreation Options

Coquitlam will be adding some new registered, live-streamed virtual fitness classes starting the week of Nov. 29 to support those who might feel more comfortable limiting their interactions at this time. These programs will be delivered by many of the same instructors previously delivering in-person, indoor group fitness classes.

Nine virtual fitness classes, including but not limited to the existing:

  • Low Impact
  • Pilates
  • High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
  • Yoga
  • Latin Dance

We will now be offering seven outdoor spin classes to replace the previous indoor spin classes. These will take place under the causeway in the Precinct/ Dogwood area between Centennial Pavilion and Poirier Community Centre.

For details or to register for existing virtual classes, as well as the new offerings and all other programs, visit www.coquitlam.ca/registration.

Cancellations

  • Aquatics/Aquafit - Cancelled until the week of Jan. 4.
  • Group Fitness - All in-person indoor group fitness, both high and low-intensity fitness, cancelled until the week of Jan. 4.
  • Pickleball and Table Tennis - Cancelled until the week of Jan. 4.
  • Gymnasium and Court Bookings - Cancelled, including pickleball, badminton, basketball and volleyball until further notice.
  • Facility Rentals - Evaluated on a case-by-case basis; to confirm contact bookings@coquitlam.ca.

Refund Process for Programs

Consistent with Coquitlam’s past practice throughout the pandemic, all registered participants will receive an automatic refund for cancelled programs and do not need to call in to recreation centres or registration lines. Please allow up to two weeks for processing.

Free Fitness-at-Home Options for All Interests and Abilities

Coquitlam recreation fitness instructors have created videos you can watch on-demand for all abilities and interests, including Chair Fit, Fit 360, HIIT, Low Impact, Pilates, Yoga and more. Users can also start and finish each workout with a virtual 10-minute Stretch with Raquel. Please visit www.coquitlam.ca/spirit and click on the Fitness at Home tile. No registration required.

Instructors also provide written workout programs and information on how to use ordinary household items as fitness equipment.

Other videos in the CoquitlamSPIRIT library include five-minute movement breaks and virtual walks through Coquitlam parks.
