COQUITLAM, BC, Aug. 2, 2023 – Discover just how easy and convenient it is to shop by bike in Coquitlam through HUB Cycling’s 2023 Bike to Shop campaign Aug. 1 to 31.
Presented in collaboration between the City of Coquitlam and HUB Cycling, Bike to Shop is a great opportunity to enjoy the nice weather, embrace the spirit of sustainability and healthy living, and explore Coquitlam’s cycling infrastructure and amenities – all while supporting local businesses.
For every $100 spent at a local business, it is estimated that $68 remains in the community, and by saving money on fuel and parking, you’ll have extra to spend at your favourite local shops.
Visit the Bike to Shop Celebration Station Event
The City and HUB Cycling are hosting a Celebration Station event to help educate new cyclists on how to find the best and safest bike routes, how to find secure bike parking and to lock your bike and how to transport your shopping items.
Gear up for your cycling adventures by picking up cycling maps, free snacks and HUB swag. You can also find out about HUB’s Streetwise cycling course, and get details on participating businesses.

This year, HUB has added participating local businesses to area maps to encourage people to shop locally by bike. Austin Heights is one of Coquitlam's great neighbourhoods with several buisnesses providing gift cards as prizes to cyclists that take part in HUB's social media scavenger hunt. Interested participants can sign up for the Coquitlam challenge at HUB Cycling.
Coquitlam’s Commitment to Cycling
As part of Coquitlam’s commitment to being cycling and micromobility friendly, the City partners with local non-profit HUB Cycling on events and activities every year, encouraging the health and environmental benefits of bike commuting with education and celebration stations. The City’s annual participation in Bike to Shop and Go by Bike Week (spring and fall) is part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable transportation.
As part of the development of a new Strategic Transportation Plan, the project team will be proposing a shift toward the development of a Micromobility Network to replace the current Cycling Network. Other recent micromobility highlights and improvements include:
- Bylaw amendments, including increased numbers of bike parking spaces, bicycle maintenance and end-of-trip facilities in new buildings, to encourage cycling in the community and make it easier for future residents and commercial office users to travel by bike.
- Bylaw amendments to allow people aged 16 and up to use e-scooters in designated areas, joining 11 other B.C. communities in a provincial pilot project to research, test and evaluate the use of e-scooters as a low-carbon transportation option. - New shared access to e-bikes and e-scooters in the City Centre neighbourhood through dockless shared e-scooters and e-bikes. coquitlam.ca/escooter
- Guildford Greenway Protected Micromobility Lane Project to upgrade the existing painted bicycle lane along Guildford Way from the Port Moody border to Pinetree Way providing its users protection from vehicles through physically separated micromobility lanes. Additional upgrades will include improved lighting, landscaping and wayfinding as well as operational and safety improvements. coquitlam.ca/GuildfordGreenway
Cycling Amenities
- Coquitlam has over 115 kilomentres of bike routes including neighbourhood bikeways, bike lanes and 32 km of multi-use pathways. Visit coquitlam.ca/cycling for online copies of the Tri-Cities Cycling Map featuring hundreds of kilometres of regional routes (hard copies available at City Hall and Coquitlam Public Libraries).
- For quick repairs, stop by the bike maintenance stations at Poirier Sport & Leisure Complex (633 Poirier St.) and City Centre Aquatic Complex (1210 Pinetree Way). Fully equipped with the basic tools to change a flat, adjust brakes and derailleurs and more.
- For temporary parking, use the TransLink bike parkade at Lafarge Lake-Douglas or Burquitlam SkyTrain stations.
- Coquitlam cyclists can choose their route on the go with the CoquitlamConnect app, available free through the App Store and Google Play. Find interactive regional bike maps with cycling routes in Coquitlam and throughout Metro Vancouver and filter routes based on skill level, as well as whether the routes are off-street, on-street or on a major street. Coquitlam’s Updated Strategic Transportation Plan
The City adopted the current Strategic Transportation Plan in 2012. Since then the City has made progress in increasing sustainable transportation in Coquitlam such as walking, cycling and public transit. There has also been significant changes in transportation over the last ten years, including the addition of SkyTrain, consideration of different kinds of street users, and emerging technologies to address climate change mitigation and adaptation.
A new Strategic Transportation Plan will provide a refreshed long-term vision for Coquitlam’s transportation network with a focus on prioritizing key actions and policy changes for the next 10 years. It will also align with other City plans such as the recently adopted Environmental Sustainability Plan and the Economic Development Strategy, while also applying the City’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion.
